New vegetarian restaurant in town, offering Thai, Vietnamese and international cuisine.

FOOD REVIEW BY MICHAEL (2014)

Cuisine: vegetarian, vegan, health food
Rating: ★★☆☆☆
Recommended dishes: stuffed bitter melon, Vietnamese yellow noodles
Price indication: reasonable; average meal THB 100-200/ person
Open: every day for lunch and dinner

Bodhi Zen is a relatively new vegetarian in town. Quite some effort has been made to turn the premises into something nice. Especially the 2nd floor is nice, it has a front and a very quiet back and you can sit there very comfortably either with a friend or in a big group.
The style of the refurbishment is Japanese looking Zen, honoring the name, simple but I can appreciate the effort to keep everything in style.
The menu is quite creative while it attempts to span the Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Indian and Western kitchen. Strangely, no Japanese kitchen despite the name.
The few dishes that I tried were good enough to come back. The poached bitter melon was craftfully made, the Vietnamese noodles not bad but I don't think it was any different from Thai.
No MSG or not too much and not oily or salty.
The portions are quite big so in the end the prices aren't too high.
The only pity is that they don't have real organic vegetables, because they get it from the big market, and then you never really know how healthy they are. It also makes a big difference in taste and flavor when the vegetables are fresh and free of pesticides residues and for this reason I still prefer places like Fuang, because there's something about the vegetables that makes it taste better.
Overall, good enough to come back another time, especially because of the comfortable 2/F on the back, where you can chill out.
