One of the very best Japanese restaurants in town. A littlebit out of the city but well worth the drive.

FOOD REVIEW BY MICHAEL

SANS SUI 山水 JAPANESE RESTAURANT
Mountain and water merge: real Japanese on the edge of town

Cuisine: Japanese
Rating: ★★★★★
Recommended dishes: any raw fish (sashimi) on the 5th / 15th / 25th of the month, sushi
Price indication: value for money; average meal about THB 400-700 / person

Open: every day for lunch and dinner
Location: old Sankampaeng road. Take Charoen Muang from Nawarat bridge, pass the train station and cross the Superhighway. Take the first soi on the right after the Superhighway.

Together with a handful of other Japanese restaurants, San Sui is on the top of the league in Chiang Mai. There is NO comparison with most standard Thai-owned Japanese restaurants in town. This is a completely different ballgame.
Like other Japanese who really care about the quality of fish they buy, the owner Mr. Samo drives all the way down to Rayong (a 10 hours drive!) three times per month, to pick fresh fish just off the nets of the fishermen. He worked as a Food and Beverage manager in big hotels before, so he knows how to pick his stock.
If you come on the 5th, the 15th or the 25th of the month, you may find him tired but the fish is most fresh. You smell it. Many Japanese customers mark this date in their calender and show up on the 5th, 15th or 25th.
I always enjoy seeing him when the '5 is in the day', he's got a lot of different fish species to offer away from the usual, that you won't find anywhere else.
Sometimes I 'catch' him when he's early and arrives already back home when the '4' is in the day. Then the fish has a wonderful texture and smell that you won't find anywhere else.
The sushi rice is good too, and they sometimes have some sets which offer good value.
The saba is not excellent, but most other dishes are fairly good too.
On the minus side, there is a lot of smoking inside so you'd have to pick a corner with good aircon.
Well worth the drive just out of town.
