Kat's Kitchen is a popular Thai restaurant for foreigners in the old Town near Taphae Gate

Lauded by over a thousand Google reviews, I realise it's time to have a bite at Kat's Kitchen. If so many people like it, then perhaps me too.
Arriving at the restaurant, nearly all tables are taken. The restaurant has even made a deal with the motorcycle rental nextdoor to use the space in front for extra tables.
When I order in Thai, the staff have trouble to understand me. Either they are too used to tourists speaking English, or there are some Burmese amongst them (or my Thai isn't that good after all, having lived in Chiang Mai for over 10 years, but I do get around with it everywhere).
I get the vibe: this is a place for tourists. Nearly everybody around me is young, farang and probably from a guesthouse nearby.
Is it also a place for long term residents, like me? I take the food to the test and order from the rather extensive menu. It contains all the standard and popular Thai dishes. The curry I order is tasty, just tasty enough and not too much. The same for the vegetables. The chicken is fresh and the portions are large. Now I understand why this place is so popular with tourists: because it masters the art of making all Thai food not too spicy, of adapting it to foreigners' taste. The food is clean and fresh. Is it authentic enough? Well, close enough.
In pre-covid times, the restaurant that used to provide this kind of food in this area was Kanjana, but it moved out. Now, it's place is taken by Kat's Kitchen.
After the meal, the question rises with me: will I come here again? The answer is a simple yes, because I'm a foreigner and I don't like the strong authentic Thai taste.
